In times of social tension, economic uncertainty, or political upheaval, migration is often
portrayed in political and media debates as the cause of complex societal problems and constructed as
a 'scapegoat'. In doing so, structural causes such as social inequality, political
misdecisions, or institutional deficits often recede into the background. Using current examples from politics
and media, the discussion explores to what extent the problematization of migration can contribute to shifting responsibility
and what impact such narratives have on social cohesion, political
decision-making processes, and democratic discourses.
